Embrace simplicity
Discover the art of slowing down
In our fast-paced world, finding solace in simplicity has become more crucial than ever. The beauty of slowing down lies in its transformative power, allowing us to untangle the complexities of life and experience the profound joy of simplicity. As someone who revels in weaving together intricate ideas, I understand the allure of complexity. Yet, I've come to realise that surrendering to simplicity can be equally rewarding.
Slowing down is not always easy; it requires a conscious effort to soften the overwhelming rush of everyday life. However, the benefits of this practice extend far beyond mere personal observation. Intensive research over the past decade has emphasised the positive impacts of slowing down on both the body and the mind. The respected psychologist and movement teacher Bo Forbes highlights how a slower pace cultivates "aha!" moments and enhances our awareness of patterns behind injuries or pain. Moreover, as the tempo gradually decelerates, a magical settling occurs, where attention solidifies within our bodies nurturing a deeper sense of connection.
If you, like me, strive for a slower pace and simpler existence, here are some practices that have helped me along the way:
1. Find a focus of attention: Amidst the chaos of racing thoughts, establishing a focal point can guide us towards inner calm. The breath, heartbeat, or even sensations in our belly can serve as anchors, grounding us in the present moment. By foregrounding these sensations during daily tasks, we can quiet the incessant chatter of the mind and develop a heightened sense of embodied awareness.
2. Be ruthless about boundaries: Saying no can be difficult, especially for those of us inclined to please others. However, it's essential to prioritise and allocate our energy wisely. Recognize that you can't do everything at once, and by setting boundaries, you can dedicate your attention to fewer things and do them well. Embrace the summer season as an opportunity to explore the concept of boundaries further, as Chinese medicine explains how this time aligns with understanding our own boundaries.
3. Practise intentional simplicity: Deliberately slowing down and simplifying activities you enjoy can enhance your experience of them. Whether it's yoga, qigong, reading, or cooking, resist the temptation to rush through them. Instead, tune in to what your body and mind truly need, and simplify by doing less. In cooking, for instance, experiment with slow-cooking methods and opt for fewer ingredients to savour the process and appreciate the flavours. Apply this approach to your reading habits as well, resisting the urge to skim through books and instead enjoying each page.
As we venture into the summer season, I invite you to join me in the pursuit of greater joy through simplicity, balance, and a slower pace. Step away from the frenzy, embrace the essence of stillness, and discover the transformative power that lies within you. Experience the magic of a slower, simpler class with me and embark on a journey towards a more serene and fulfilling existence.
