Why Everyone Should Have a Qigong Practice

The Benefits of Consistency and Energy Cultivation

Qigong is an ancient practice that blends movement, breath, and intention to cultivate and harmonize energy within the body. IIts roots lie in Taoism, where people observed the cycles of nature, seeking balance and alignment with the rhythms of life. An early precursor of what we call Qigong is Daoyin, dating back to 200 BCE, which focused on exercises, breath control, and meditation to support this connection. This holistic approach is still relevant today, offering benefits to people from all walks of life.

But what exactly is Qigong, and why should you consider making it a part of your life?

What is Qigong?

The term Qigong is derived from two Chinese words: qi (pronounced ‘chee’), which means energy, and gong, meaning work or cultivation. So, simply put, Qigong is the cultivation of life energy.

Though often associated with a set of physical postures and movements, Qigong is more than just a movement practice. It encompasses various methods such as meditation, visualisation, and reflection, aimed at cultivating qi—the life energy that flows through every living being. Qigong is traditionally used for medical, martial, and spiritual purposes and can be practiced in many ways. It can also be applied to daily life, guiding us in living more consciously and in harmony with nature.

The philosophy behind Qigong is steeped in Taoism, where people closely observed the cycles of nature: planting and harvesting, life and death, all of which influenced their understanding of balance and interconnectedness. As the Tao Te Ching so wisely states:

“What is rooted is easy to nourish.
What is recent is easy to correct.
What is brittle is easy to break.
What is small is easy to scatter.
Prevent trouble before it arises.
Put things in order before they exist.
The giant pine tree grows from a tiny sprout.
The journey of a thousand miles starts from beneath your feet.”

This ancient wisdom underlines the importance of cultivating balance and harmony from the ground up—and Qigong is a powerful tool for doing so.

The Benefits of Qigong

Qigong harnesses the power of the mind, intention, and simple movements to bring balance and harmony to both the body and its systems. Here are some of the key benefits:

  • Physical Health: Qigong strengthens the body, improves flexibility, regulates the nervous system, and can enhance bone density. The gentle movements help improve circulation and energy flow.

  • Emotional Balance: It’s an excellent tool for reducing stress, anxiety, and insomnia. By calming the nervous system, it helps balance emotions and promotes relaxation.

  • Energy Regulation: Qigong teaches you how to manage your energy—boosting it when needed and calming it when necessary. It can help dissolve tension, promote healing, and improve overall vitality.

Why Consistency is Key

While the benefits of Qigong are clear, the true magic happens when it becomes a regular part of your life. Consistency in practice is essential to unlocking its full potential.

Many people ask, "How often should I practice?" and the answer is simple: every day, even if it's just for a few minutes. Like any other skill, the more consistent you are with your practice, the more you’ll notice the changes in both your mind and body. It’s about creating a routine that allows you to deepen your connection with yourself, your energy, and your environment.

Whether it’s a quick morning session to start your day or a more expansive evening routine, consistent practice helps you refine your energy flow, making it a vital part of your overall well-being. Think of it as an investment in your health that pays off in long-term benefits. I find that even 5 minutes whilst making a cup of tea can help.

What to Expect in a Qigong Class

If you’re new to Qigong or considering joining a class, you may wonder what to expect. With thousands of different styles and forms, the approach to Qigong can vary significantly. But in my classes, I aim to offer a space that is both playful and contemplative. I draw inspiration from nature, philosophy, and the wisdom of ancient practices.

You can expect a mix of gentle warming exercises, dynamic movements, static postures, and guided meditation. I also weave in reflections on the season, the elements, and other ways to connect with nature’s rhythms. Through this, I invite participants to listen to their bodies, allowing the practice to become a deeply personal experience.

Qigong is often a non-verbal practice, and it is not about perfection or performance. Instead, it’s about feeling your energy, sensing your body, and nurturing a deeper connection between mind, body, and spirit.

How to Practice Qigong

Qigong doesn’t require fancy equipment or gear. All you need is comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. You don’t need a mat or any special props—just your body and the intention to connect with your energy.

Is Qi Real?

The concept of qi may sound mystical, but it’s actually very practical. Qi is often compared to prana in yoga, the life force that flows through all living things—plants, animals, and humans. While it’s difficult to measure, studies have shown that our energy levels are impacted by physical health, mental states, and the environment. Just as we can feel the difference between a calm, quiet place and a noisy, chaotic one, we can also sense our energy.

In a recent article in the New York Times, writer Nick Paumgarten explored the idea of energy from a scientific and social perspective. While energy is certainly biochemical, Paumgarten discovered that energy also has a psychological and social dimension. Our interactions with others—human and non-human—affect our energy, making Qigong a practice that connects us to something larger than ourselves.
